What is a NAS?

The ReadyNAS systems have consistently been well-reviewed and well-received culminating with PC World selection of the ReadyNAS NV+ as the #8 best in the prestigious “100 Best Products of 2007 Awards”.  The 4-bay ReadyNAS NV+ along with the follow-on ReadyNAS NVX, the 2-bay ReadyNAS Duo, and the 6-bay ReadyNAS Pro have been the workhorse in serving petabytes of backup and streaming data to the advanced home.  It’s quite apparent, the ReadyNAS has found a home at home, and the ReadyNAS Ultra family aims to take it to the next level.

With the new fast and energy efficient 64-bit single and dual-core processors, the ReadyNAS Ultra begs to be at the center of your home media network.  It’s no longer about pure speed, as advanced home users now request for features useful in today’s mobile society, like:

  • How do you share your photos and music with family and friends at their home, on their big screen?
  • How can you enjoy your media library on mobile devices when you’re waiting at the airport or drinking coffee at Starbucks?
  • How can you extend your TiVo way beyond its built-in capacity and then playback your saved programs on any TiVo in your household?
  • How do you access anything on your NAS anywhere you have Internet access just like you were on the local network?
  • And how can you do all this without creating a hole in the ozone layer?

The new home users want real solutions, and the ReadyNAS Ultra delivers.  The ReadyNAS team went beyond its own engineering and seeked out key partners to contribute, and we think you’ll like what we’ve done.  Check out all the features below, and we think you’ll find you’ll not only want a ReadyNAS Ultra, but you actually need one.

The current ReadyNAS Ultra product family consists of the following models:

  • ReadyNAS Ultra 2 – 2-bay model with up to 4TB capacity
  • ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus – 2-bay model with dual-core processor and up to 4TB capacity
  • ReadyNAS Ultra 4 – 4-bay model with up to 8TB capacity
  • ReadyNAS Ultra 4 Plus – 4-bay model with dual-core processor and up to 8TB capacity
  • ReadyNAS Ultra 6 – 6-bay model with up to 12TB capacity
  • ReadyNAS Ultra 6 Plus – 6-bay model with dual-core processor and up to 12TB capacity

TiVo® Integration

NETGEAR ReadyNAS is the very first NAS to be certified TiVo compatible and that’s because NETGEAR owns ReadyDLNA and has integrated DLNA support with TiVo.  TiVo users have had the option of playing back video streams (along with photos and music) from the ReadyNAS in the past, but with Ultra, you can now save your favorite programs to your ReadyNAS for future playback by just using your TiVo remote control.

Mobile media access with Orb

Admit it – we’re all mobile junkies, and we wouldn’t know what to do if we didn’t have our iPhone or Droid.  Our partnership with Orb now allows Ultra to transcode and stream just about any video, photo, and music remotely to your mobile device wherever you are.  Just imagine being able to catch-up on your movie straight from your ReadyNAS next time you’re at an airport or waiting for someone at a coffee shop, or your toddler really needs his Elmo fix while you’re on the road.

Remote DLNA media streaming with Skifta and ReadyDLNA

DLNA is the buzzword that you’ve been hearing about.  Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and popular network media playback devices support DLNA, and even your new TV and hi-fi receiver may support it.  DLNA is a standard that benefits media streaming, and the ReadyNAS was an early adopter of DLNA, allowing the it to be at the center of your home media streaming solution.  Our partnership with Skifta now allows DLNA media streaming to go outside your home.  With Skifta, you can now shift your media to your family or friend’s house and enjoy it on a remote DLNA renderer or playback device.

iSCSI

We had initially thought iSCSI support was only important in a business environment.  Well, we were proven wrong, and we now include iSCSI support on the Ultra.  Certain applications just don’t work across a network file sharing protocol, and they require a block-level interface, like a USB device.  With iSCSI support on the ReadyNAS, you can allocate a certain capacity from your data volume to appear as a block device, and with an iSCSI initiator on your client, you can mount that network block device and make it show up similar to a USB drive.  This allows applications like iMovie and Outlook to work seamlessly with data residing on the ReadyNAS.

Sharing

Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris

Sharing is at the heart of all ReadyNAS, and ubiquitously sharing data to all popular operating systems is what the ReadyNAS does best.  The ReadyNAS speaks various file sharing protocols, including CIFS (SMB), AFP, NFS, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, FTPS, and Rsync, so whether you’re running any one or more of the various Windows releases, OS X, Linux, or Solaris, the ReadyNAS offers the best possible sharing experience in a heterogeneous environment.

User and Group Quotas

The ReadyNAS supports disk quotas on a per-user or per-group basis. Even with terabytes of storage, certain users or groups of users may abuse the usage norm. The quota system allows you to specify how much space each user or group is allowed to use on the ReadyNAS, and the guilty party and the ReadyNAS admin will be properly notified of any violation.

ReadyNAS Photos

Have you ever wanted to share your photos straight from your home instead of having to upload your files to a remote location?  Not only can it take forever to upload your photos and often deal with timeouts, folks who you are sharing to often need to create an account just to view your photos.  And when your family and friends want to print pictures, they’ll have to do so with a low-res file that’s optimized for display.  Don’t forget your free account comes with a space limitation, and a small one at that.  And of course, if the photo site goes under or merges with another, you’re left without your albums.

With ReadyNAS Photos, simply share your photos straight from the ReadyNAS.  No complicated router setup to do.  Simply download the free ReadyNAS add-on and PC or Mac software, and install.  Then upload your photos straight to your ReadyNAS and start sharing.

Protection

RAID disk failure protection

With everything now being stored digitally, a simple disk failure can be catastrophic, especially with the large capacity disks that are certainly the norm these days. And it really is not a matter of if but when you will have a massive data loss. Your financial records, your business data, and your whole family history captured on photos and videos can be lost at an instant.  And by chance if data recovery is possible, the cost will be quite substantial.

To protect against data loss from disk failures, the ReadyNAS uses RAID, which stands for “Redundant Array of Independent Disks”.  RAID is simply a way of pooling disks into one big virtual disk. If one of the disks in that pool fails, the data from the failed disk can be resurrected by the parity information kept on the surviving disks in the pool.  Once the failed disk is replaced, data that was lost with the failed disk can be regenerated onto the replacement disk.

The cost of safeguarding your data form one disk failure comes at a price of one disk capacity, regardless of whether your RAID volume consists of two drives or six drives. For example, a ReadyNAS with four 1 TB drives will have a protected capacity of 3 TB.   Additionally, because larger capacity disks, the propensity for a two-disk failure in a RAID set can grow as you have more disks in a pool.  On ReadyNAS with 6 disks or greater, you have the option of setting the RAID volume for dual redundancy, allowing for up to 2 disks to fail simultaneously without losing any data.

With the price of disks being relatively cheap and data loss and recovery being so expensive, it’s really a no-brainer to use RAID whenever you have irreplaceable data.

Hotplug Disk Replacement

Disk failure is inevitable, so when that time comes, you certainly don’t want to have to fumble your way through trying to disassemble your device. With the Ultra, simply press on the latch to release the disk tray, remove 4 screws that attaches the disk to the tray, replace with a new disk, and insert the disk back into the chassis, all while the unit is powered on. There’s no need to power off the chassis, and there’s no need to worry about downtime. Once the new disk is in place, the disk is resync’d in the background to provide full protection from another disk failure.

Active UPS Monitoring

Ever wonder what happens when the power goes out for a little too long and the UPS battery is drained? The ReadyNAS constantly monitors the UPS battery level and sends alerts whenever there’s a power interruption. And when the battery runs low, the ReadyNAS shuts down gracefully, avoiding any file corruption caused by unwritten cached data. Just use a UPS from the ReadyNAS compatibility list, connect the USB monitoring cable to the ReadyNAS, and everything else is taken care of automatically.

And if you have multiple ReadyNAS systems, you can connect them all to the same UPS, and the alerts and graceful shutdown are supported simply by connecting the USB monitoring cable to one ReadyNAS and setting the other units to monitor this ReadyNAS over the network.

Alerts

Your data is important and you need to be aware of any anomaly on the ReadyNAS. Rest assure that the email alert system will let you know what’s going on. You will be notified when a disk fails, when a disk overheats, when a disk encounters warning signs of failure, when a fan fails, when a user or group reaches a disk quota limit, and when your volume is near capacity. It’ll even alert you in case the attached UPS is on battery. You can rest assured that ReadyNAS systems are well-prepared for non-ideal conditions just as it’s able to function optimally in ideal conditions.

Backup

Integrated Backup

If you’re looking to centralize your backups, the ReadyNAS has a web-based Backup Manager built right into Frontview. From there, you have the option of scheduling backups to or from the ReadyNAS shares. You can opt to backup from a remote site over CIFS, NFS, FTP, HTTP, or RSYNC protocols, or similarly backup the ReadyNAS share to a remote site. You can even perform backups between the ReadyNAS and an attached USB disk drive or to another ReadyNAS.

Programmable Backup Button

We’ve made the Backup Button on the front of the Ultra quite powerful.  By default, pressing the button will backup the content of the backup share on the ReadyNAS to a connected USB storage device.  However, you can override this behavior with any one or more of the backup jobs that’s defined with the Backup Manager (see above).  With just a press of the button, you can now have the Backup Manager start off a series of pre-defined backup jobs in sequence.

Time Machine

The best way to backup your Mac is with Time Machine. But you don’t have to be stuck using Time Capsule if you have a ReadyNAS. Just enable the Time Machine service on the ReadyNAS and start backing up all the Macs on your LAN straight to the ReadyNAS via Time Machine.  Whether you need one file or need to restore the entire Mac image (such as when you’re upgrading a hard disk on the Mac), having the Time Machine backup on the ReadyNAS can be invaluable.

Continuous Data Protect (CDP) Backup

The ReadyNAS comes with a 3-user license of Memeo Backup Premium.  This software resides on the CD that ships with the ReadyNAS. Backup Premium utilized CDP and versioning to give you instantaneous backup of your PC or Mac data, and allows you to revert back to any of the earlier version of a file.  Simply select the folder you want to backup and forget it.  Backup Premium works great with your laptop, even in disconnected mode, queuing up all the changes until your laptop is reconnected to your ReadyNAS network.  When you need to restore an earlier version of a file, simply right-click on a file and you can select the revision that you want to restore to.

Network Recycle Bin

Windows users accustomed to the Recycle Bin on their PC will love the Recycle Bin on the ReadyNAS. If you’ve ever inadvertently deleted a file, you know well the anxiety as you frantically search for a backup somewhere. With the Recycle Bin option on the ReadyNAS, you can relax, because your deleted file will be found in the Recycle Bin of your ReadyNAS share.  Simply define how large your Recycle Bin will hold and how long to hold the files there.

ReadyNAS Vault

The ReadyNAS can be the absolute center of your storage world, but what happens when a catastrophe takes the ReadyNAS with it? It’s a smart idea to think about disaster recovery, and with ReadyNAS Vault, offsite backups can be enabled in a matter of minutes. With ReadyNAS Vault, all your backups and restores are controlled in the cloud, so you’re never more than a quick Internet access from managing or accessing your backups.  You can even share your backup files or folders safely with others, and they’ll have access to just the files or folders you share whether your ReadyNAS is turn on or not.

Take a look at how quickly you can get going with ReadyNAS Vault.
